The supernatural elements are really silly, especially the aggressively looming shots of the cedar tree which has its own wailing musical Leitmotiv. There are some good intentionality funny bits too though. What helps Poirot piece together what happened with the rook rifle is a "free association" session with Captain Black. It starts with Poirot stating a word with an obvious opposite (like "Black", or "day") and Black answering ("white" and "night" respectively). The details about the rook rifle story come out as the free association moves on from generalities to specifics.

Free association was a practice of the psychoanalytic (Freudian) school and was meant to get around subconscious blocks.(It is still used as "brainstorming" in the writing process method many American writing teachers use.) In Christie, we see this need to get around subconscious blocks again in "The Underdog", when hypnosis is used to retrieve the memories of a witness who is convinced a murder suspect is innocent.

Because free association doesn't make the best television, and free association was the core of the story, Marsdon Manner was essentially rewritten from top to bottom. The rook rifle story (on which the murder at Marsdon relies) now comes from a Nairobi newspaper wrapped around a gift. I was never fond of the story itself and this adaptation was disappointing, if comic in spots.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555477445321605035.post-81553466891209640662020-04-13T09:01:36.832+02:002020-04-13T09:01:36.832+02:00And this is the episode where we learn (or at leas...And this is the episode where we learn (or at least I was observant enough to notice) that our dear inspector Japp is a left-handed person.eMTehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00903852137504065490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555477445321605035.post-55790245219593379902019-02-16T19:10:49.831+01:002019-02-16T19:10:49.831+01:00Naughton?
